Background: Oostkamp is a vibrant neighbourhood east of the central business district of Bloemenwijk. Originally, Oostkamp was a mostly working-class area, with several factories located around the neighbourhood's commercial and residential areas. However, due to the poor working conditions in these factories, most of them were forced to close down after new labour laws came into force in the late 1930s. These old factories were either demolished and replaced with new commercial and residential buildings over the next few decades, or converted into loft apartments. Oostkamp would remain a working-class neighbourhood for a while though, due to it's proximity to the King's University, a large number of lower income students moved into the area.
The area has gentrified in the last 20 or so years, becoming a hub for tech startups and trendy bars, shops, and restaurants. Loft apartments located in the old factories are a trendy commodity, and the neighbourhood is a desirable destination for the young people of Bloemenwijk. The neighbourhood's gentrification has not been without controversy though, and many in the area have opposed new developments that would demolish old historic buildings. Due to the neighbourhood's young demographics, the neighbourhood skews quite left politically, usually favouring the Socialist and Reform parties, with most older residents heavily favouring the Reform party due to their overtly pro-tenant policies.
